Emery traveled to Grantsville last Friday night to play the Grantsville Cowboys in their homecoming football game. Emery left town after losing the contest 38-0. After high hopes before the season began, the Spartan team has continued to be snake-bitten this season as injuries and other problems have plagued the team all season.

The Emery team started five sophomores in this game as veteran players patrolled the side lines in street clothes in ever increasing numbers. Out this week were Marco Mota, Gavin McDermott, and Zack West in addition to those who had been out previously. Ridge Nielson, the kicker, hurt his leg on the opening kickoff never to return and Ryan Cox joined the list midway through the game.

Grantsville, one of the preseason favorites in 3-A, showed no mercy throughout the contest as they kept their starters on the field the entire game and scored on six of their 10 possessions in the game. Emery countered by punting in every possession except the two that had turnovers.

Emery's defense did a decent job of holding the Cowboys in check but the good field position that the Cowboys seemed to start every drive with did the team in. Grantsville started in Emery territory four times plus near midfield several others.

Leading tacklers for the Spartans in this game were Slayde Childs, linebacker, and Austin Allred, safety, with 12 each. Right behind were Matt Mecham, linebacker, with 11 and Justan Potter, defensive end, with 10. Emery will now play at home the final three games of the season starting this Thursday against Judge Memorial. The game the following week is scheduled for Wednesday night due to fall break.
