Wilberg Memorial Service
This Friday marks the 30th anniversary of the Wilberg Mine disaster. It was on December 19, 1984 when 28 miners and supervisors were trapped in the mine by a fast moving fire. One miner escaped, but the rest perished in the worst coal mine fire in Utah history. An investigation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration determined the cause of the fire was a faulty air compressor, a finding disputed by the mine owner, Emery Mining Corporation and the The United Mine Workers of America.
The UMWA District 22 will hold a Remembrance Memorial service on Friday at the Wilberg Monument, located west of Orangeville at the junction of highways 29 and 57. The Union will conduct a tribute with evergreens and a candle presentation beginning at 4 pm.
